San Juan Capistrano Mission

We've been studying about California History and really dove into learning about the Missions.  I asked the kids if they wanted to make one. Why did I even ask?! They love projects. This one took us a month or more. JM graciously helped us make our blue prints and the structure for the mission. Of course when asked, they wanted to build San Juan Capistrano Mission. They know it so well. We decided to build the part of the Mission that was destroyed, The Old Stone Church and some Padre's Quarters.
Gluing and pinning the Walls together

Foam board, Foam Balls, Glue and Pins
The kids made tables, chairs and food out of clay.
 Tortillas!

 All built...Next, texture!

Plaster of Paris....good idea in theory. It was a bit of a nightmare to work with. Dried too fast!

 Painting floors and roofs

Last thing to do was to attached the church bells. Sadly the floor warped...I think the paint made it do that. It wouldn't lay down straight.  JM had the idea to take off of the platform and stick it in the dirt in the backyard. Yes! Nice affect. Father Serra is muy happy.
