Our Homeschool Days Fall 2015

I can't believe we are on week 6 of homeschooling. It's been so busy and so wonderful to watch our children learn. The subjects that we do all together are History, Science, Art, Music and Poetry. The big kids have their own Grammar, Writing and Math programs and I'm doing a Special Preschool program with Ansel called Five In A Row. He likes it a lot as it is very literature based. It seems he prefers being read to to any other type of writing or "busy work".  I'm good with that.

One afternoon JM and I took the kids to the J Paul Getty Museum Los Angeles. They have a wonderful collection of Art but something new to us was the Children's Creative Center. They had such a good time creating, exploring and searching for all the paintings on their scavenger hunt sheet.

Masks and Van Gogh's Irises
Brilliant

Later that week we learned about Van Gogh and his style of painting called "Impasto". We made impasto like paint and the kids painted their own version of irises.

They came out gorgeous! This is Gabriella's lovely painting.

This kids does not mess around when it comes to painting. He dives right in.
Science has been pretty fun too. This year we will be learning about all sorts of flying things....birds, insects, bats etc. Right now we are studying birds. We made little airplanes and conducted an experiment to understand how a bird flies and catches air.

Our Nature Walks have been everyone's favorite homeschool activity...including Mama. We explore once a week and draw and lable our findings in our Nature Notebooks. Ansel loves to find acorns.

Ansel shared his acorns with Sissy....He had a backpack partially full of them.

Another day of Adventuring
Some of their findings
They collected some bark that looks like those stones! Can you tell which are the bark pieces?
These are my favorite days...Nature Studies and Notebooks....I love to see our children learn and explore and do the things they love as they learn. I'm blessed. Homeschooling is tiring sometimes but that I can witness our children learn, teach them to read, write, draw, discuss etc is a great gift to me.
Someday these little sweeties will be big, strong men.
I've had to change our history lessons a bit this year to accommodate a 4th grader and 1st grader. We were supposed to study 1850-present. It's been a bit heavy with more mature content and will cover many wars etc...I don't think Jude is ready for this yet. As we approached the Civil War I decided to spend lots of time on Abraham Lincoln. We've read so many books on him and now he's everyones favorite president...even Ansel's.
This book is brilliantly illustrated and is a wonderful narrative of his life. I highly recommend anything written by these authors.
This one was good too.
This was a Five In A Row book that Ansel and I read for two weeks. He did some activities with Papa that coincided with the book. He also liked reading lots of other books on Rabbits, especially the Beatrix Potter books. JM has graciously moved his schedule around and is giving me a few hours a week to help teach Ansel and watch Simeon after his morning nap. I am able to focus on the big kids during that time. He's been really helpful to me.
These are "Fairy Houses"(as the kids call them) that the Gabriella, Jude and Ansel made. Creative critters.
This looks like a Hobbit house.

And this little love bug is discovering food. He is enjoying some and getting used to others.
Sweet potato, String beans and a side of blocks!

Mmm watermelon......
I just love his eyes. You can't really tell in pictures but Simeon's eye color is grey green. We wonder if it will stay or change.
This is my silly Ansel Face....See this link (scroll to the bottom)
Gabriella wanted to do the Ansel Face too.
My big kids. They are all so uniquely different.
Catching some air

Little Red Bell Peppers and String Beans for Simeon's din din.
Don't choke Sim-oh! He doesn't have any teeth yet at 9 months!! He just gnaws on his food.

Crazy Blondie Haired Boy!

Auntie Laurie and Uncle Oscar, I hope you can show these pictures to Little Grandma. I thought of you both as I wrote this blog. Hope you enjoyed it! I'm so glad you're having a wonderful visit with Grandma! We miss seeing her. A big hug and kiss to all of you from all of us! Sleep with he Angels little Gma! Love you Love you!
